Wildlife & Bird Watching

Scotland has an abundance of wildlife and birds to discover

Within this area of the Cairngorms National park are an incredible range of wildlife and birds to discover. Although endangered in other parts of the UK, Red squirrels can be found in abundance here, and can often be seen in the trees within the grounds of Coig na Shee. Thanks to the Caledonian Pine Forests of Rothiemurchus and Abernethy, the nature of the area is a sanctuary for these handsome creatures. You are also likely to spot red deer during a visit to the Highlands of Scotland, and the Cairngorms National Park contains Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd. Perhaps, as a keen bird enthusiast, you will catch a glimpse of Slavonian Grebes, Black Grouse, Capercaillie, Osprey, Crested Tits or even Scottish Crossbill, Britain's only endemic bird species. In winter, Hen Harriers gather to roost at nearby Insh Marshes RSPB reserve, along with geese and Whooper Swans. At dusk keep an eye out for the reclusive Pine Marten or Badger – they are out there! Very rare is the Scottish wildcat – if you spot one of these you will have seen one of the most secretive animals of the region.
