In September, an amazing event comes to Carrbridge. This event literally has something for everyone. The Scottish open chainsaw carving competition is a day with excitement and artistry as chainsaws meet the beauty and delicacy of art. You can spend the day watching as these amazing pieces of art are created. Then you get a chance to take one home with you.
The competitors have a total of four hours to turn an 8-ft long piece of wood into a work of art. All they are allowed to use is a standard chainsaw. Watching these artists at work is truly fascinating. Once they're all done the judges score the pieces and name a winner. At the end of the day, the pieces are sold by auction.
After the main competition, all the carvers are asked to create a second, small, piece which will be auctioned off. The proceeds from this auction are going to a fund to support projects in the local community.
If you're hoping to buy a piece at the auction, then you need to make sure that you have sufficient cash on hand. Most of the carvers are unlikely to be able to accept card payments on the day.
During the day, there will be a wide selection of stalls for you to browse. Small local businesses from all across the Highlands will have their wares on show. It's a great chance to take home a locally produced gift for your loved ones.
As well as shopping, there will also be a huge range of food and drink stalls. The local parent-teacher council have a tea tent raising funds for the schools. There is also a beer tent and a variety of fun activities to try. Although you may want to try the woodworking before you head into the beer tent!
From Coig Na Shee in Newtonmore, you can enjoy a leisurely train or bus ride to Carrbridge for the event. It takes around 30 minutes to drive from Newtonmore north along the A9 to Carrbridge.Back to Blog Page
