Since 1997, Aviemore has played host to an event like no other. On the last weekend in August Harley-Davidson riders from all around the world descend on the Scottish Highlands. In the first year of the rally, there were 200 riders. By 2016, there were as many as 4,000 riders. The whole weekend is filled with music, motorbike displays and a colossal ride through the glorious Scottish mountains. It's a fantastic event, whether you are a biker or bystander!
There is entertainment on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Because of the size of the event, amazing music acts come every year from all around the world. This means there is an excellent mix of local talent as well as huge names.
The Ride Out
The ride out happens on the Saturday. Riders who are taking part meet up in Aviemore. All the bikers set out en-masse riding through the streets of the town. Happy and excited spectators line the streets. The huge cavalcade of bikes then takes a tour around the wonderful roads of Speyside. It's a fantastic ride, and the camaraderie of all the bikers makes for a fun and exciting trip.
While the event is run by Dunedin HOG (Harley-Davidson Owners Group), other bikers are most welcome.
Bikes and stalls line the high street of Aviemore all weekend. If there's a bike that you want to try, especially a cruiser, this is a great opportunity to do just that. There is also often the chance to try out some brand new jeeps too.
What makes this event so great is how friendly every single person is. You don't have to be a Harley fan; you don't even have to be a biker. Everyone who attends is welcoming and there to have a good time.
Aviemore is just 20-30 minutes away by car, motorbike, train or bus from Newtonmore, meaning Coig Na Shee is the perfect base for enjoying the Thunder In The Glens event.Back to Blog Page
